Counterfeit Identifications and Facial Recognition

As a former Fraud Detective I was inundated with cases involving counterfeit driver licenses. One case in particular involved over 100 counterfeit identifications with matching counterfeit credit cards. I was excited because I had an actual picture of my suspect! My excitement diminished as lead after lead went cold. Ultimately I was stuck with only an image of my suspect with no way of identifying them.

Now one of the first steps Detectives can do is search the counterfeit driver license photo through facial recognition and get results back within a couple of seconds. For years we sat on massive amounts of investigatory data in booking photos but no way to utilize them. With the high quality frontal photos used on driver licenses, it’s allowing us to match them to the suspect’s booking photos at 99% to 100% similarity scores. Now this tool can provide us with instant leads potentially leading to faster arrests. In the world of fraud, these perpetrators wreak havoc on multiple victims every single day.
